Vi havde forladt Gisborne Marina under str\u00e5lende solskin, og havet blev roligt og glasagtigt, da vi n\u00e6rmede os Tauranga. Forholdene kunne ikke have v\u00e6ret mere ideelle: ingen d\u00f8nninger, let brise og den konstante summen fra motorerne, der bar os nordp\u00e5.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Klokken 14:15, uden varsel, gennembr\u00f8d en ukendt alarm den stille rytme i passagen. Alles \u00f8jne rettede sig mod multifunktionsdisplayene, men der dukkede ingen fejlmeddelelser op. Alt s\u00e5 normalt ud, bortset fra styrbordsmotoren, som pludselig var begyndt at omdrejningstallene h\u00f8jere end bagbords. Noget var helt sikkert galt.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Vi lette p\u00e5 gash\u00e5ndtaget i h\u00e5b om at k\u00f8be os selv tid til at diagnosticere problemet. \u00d8jeblikke senere bem\u00e6rkede vi, at b\u00e5den l\u00e5 lavere i vandet end den burde, og badeplatformen var n\u00e6sten ved at r\u00f8re overfladen. Uanset hvad der skete, eskalerede det hurtigt.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Vi kontaktede straks kystvagten via radio med en PAN PAN-melding og underrettede dem om situationen. Da en af \u200b\u200bbes\u00e6tningsmedlemmerne \u00e5bnede maskinrumslugen for at unders\u00f8ge sagen, str\u00f8mmede en b\u00f8lge af sort, skarp r\u00f8g ud. Hele rummet var forkullet og m\u00f8rklagt, et tydeligt bevis p\u00e5, at der var udbrudt brand. Det s\u00e5 ud til, at det automatiske brandslukningssystem allerede var udl\u00f8st. Mere alarmerende var det, at havvand str\u00f8mmede ind et sted. Maskinrummet var oversv\u00f8mmet helt op til motorblokkene.     <\/p>\n\n<p>Vi var ikke sikre p\u00e5, om de automatiske l\u00e6nsepumper var g\u00e5et i stykker, eller om de simpelthen var overbelastede, s\u00e5 bes\u00e6tningen greb den manuelle pumpe og begyndte at arbejde p\u00e5 h\u00f8jtryk. Men for hvert minut, der gik, faldt b\u00e5den lavere. Det blev tydeligt, at dette ikke l\u00e6ngere var en situation, vi kunne kontrollere.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Opkaldet blev opgraderet til en Mayday-situation. Vi udl\u00f8ste hurtigt redningsfl\u00e5den og forberedte gribeposen. EPIRB og PLB blev aktiveret, deres lys blinkede konstant, en lille, men kraftfuld beroligelse i et kaotisk \u00f8jeblik. Da vi skubbede ind i hovedkahytten for at samle det n\u00f8dvendige, blev omfanget af oversv\u00f8mmelsen umiskendeligt. Personlige ejendele fl\u00f8d frit rundt som affald i en tidevandspool. I den fjerne ende af kahytten var vandet allerede oppe til kn\u00e6ene.     <\/p>\n\n<p>Da vi inds\u00e5, at fart\u00f8jet nu var hinsides redning, tog vi den beslutning, som ingen skipper nogensinde \u00f8nsker at tr\u00e6ffe.
