Ocean Signal launches the World’s smallest AIS MOB device – the rescueME MOB1

Ocean Signal introduces the world’s smallest AIS MOB device with integrated DSC. The new rescueME MOB1 has been designed to attach easily to even the most compact life jackets, ready for automatic activation in the event of a man overboard situation.

Further strengthening Ocean Signal’s rescueME portfolio of innovative safety products, the MOB1 device provides two methods of communicating the location of a person in the water back to the boat and other vessels in the vicinity. Once the rescueME MOB1 is activated, AIS (Automatic Identification System) transmissions will provide accurate position information on the vessel’s chart plotter. Depending upon capability, the plotter will show a red circle plus longitude, latitude, and distance and bearing to the person in distress. In addition, the Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF alarm will also be triggered.

Alan Wrigley, Ocean Signal Managing Director, said: “In a man overboard situation, your first and best chance of rescue will always be from the vessel from which you have become separated. The immediate priority is to ensure that your fellow crew members are aware of the emergency and to do everything possible to make sure they have sight of you or know where you are relative to the vessel. Even in moderate sea states, it is alarming how easy it can be to lose sight of a person in the water.

“The rescueME MOB1 will provide anyone out at sea with a reliable life-saving device which will provide reassurance that they can be located quickly and recovered having fallen into the sea. As with all our rescueME products, MOB1 has been designed with the needs and comfort of the user in mind so that it is as unobtrusive and compact as possible.”

At 30 per cent smaller than other similar products, the lightweight and easy-to-use rescueME MOB1 measures just 134mm (height) by 38mm (width) by 27mm (depth) and weighs 90g. It can be conveniently attached to the oral tube of a life jacket using the mounting clip supplied with the device.

The MOB1 is designed to be activated automatically and the preparations for use are simple. The Ocean Signal device can be pre-armed in an instant and the activation tape then connected and placed around the deflated bladder of the life jacket. The rescueME MOB1 is therefore automatically triggered the moment the life jacket is inflated.

The MOB1 features an integrated 66-channel GPS receiver ensuring that it will transmit accurate position data for a minimum of 24 hours back to the boat’s plotter and any other vessels in the area which may be able to assist in the recovery. The integrated strobe light with moulded lens ensures the survivor is easier to spot in poor light conditions.

Operating within a temperature range of -20C and +55C, the rescueME MOB1 has a comprehensive self-test facility and features a seven-year battery life, which is further supported by a five-year warranty.

The Ocean Signal rescueME MOB1 will be available in January 2015, at an RRP of £209 + VAT.
