This does not mean you should not carry a phone. Your phone is one of the most useful safety tools you own. It can provide maps, weather, location sharing, calls, messages and, on compatible models, emergency satellite messaging.
But for remote sailing, hiking, kayaking, flying or adventure travel, the safest way to think about it is simple:

If you sail offshore, an EPIRB should usually be considered part of the vessel’s core safety equipment. A PLB adds an additional layer of personal safety for individual crew members.
