But it is not the same as carrying a dedicated Personal Locator Beacon. To use it, you need a compatible iPhone, enough battery, a working screen, the ability to interact with the device, and a clear enough view of the sky to connect and remain connected while information is sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In calm conditions, that can work very well. In a real emergency, the difference matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be cold, wet, injured, wearing gloves, dealing with a broken screen, low battery, heavy rain, sea spray, poor visibility, forest cover, cliffs, mountains or rough seas. Your phone is one of the most useful safety tools you own.
