Ocean Signal PLB1 Activated After UTV Accident on Hunting Trip

What happened?

Having been on a hunting trip, Dave and his four mates were making their way out of the hunting area in side-by-side utility vehicles, following a well-formed 4WD track. During the journey, the lead UTV left the track and rolled down a very steep gully.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Dave immediately activated his Ocean Signal Personal Locator Beacon before making his way down the steep terrain with another member of the group to reach the vehicle.

When they reached the victim, it was clear the situation was extremely serious. A second Personal Locator Beacon was activated to reinforce the emergency and ensure rescue authorities understood the urgency of the incident.

Within minutes of the first beacon being activated, Dave’s emergency contact received notification that the distress signal had been detected. Rescue efforts were mobilized quickly, and within an hour a Westpac Rescue Helicopter had arrived on scene.

Despite the rapid response and the group’s immediate actions, the victim sadly passed away at the scene. At the time of writing, it remains unclear whether the incident was caused solely by the rollover or whether a medical event contributed. An autopsy is being carried out to determine the cause.

While this story has a tragic outcome, it also highlights the importance of carrying a Personal Locator Beacon in remote areas. The immediate activation of the beacons ensured rescue authorities were alerted without delay and able to reach the scene as quickly as possible.

Words of wisdom

Always carry a PLB and make sure you set it off immediately. Make sure your emergency contact is aware of all people in the group and their emergency contacts.
