What happened?

After a motor vehicle incident in Motueka, New Zealand, a locator beacon led to my rescue. I found myself in a ditch on the side of the road, lying on my back with my legs elevated and resting against the sloping embankment. My right leg was completely numb and pointing unnaturally. Despite the shock, I remained calm, relying on my training as a First Responder. I quickly assessed my body and determined that only my right leg was affected.

Recognizing the importance of immediate action, I activated my Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), designed for easy use in emergencies. While waiting for help, I spoke with one of the individuals from the utility vehicle (not the driver, who was in more shock than I was). I then noticed dampness on the legs of my riding pants, which led to a brief moment of concern. I wondered if I had ruptured my femoral artery, potentially causing massive tissue damage. However, I quickly realized that if such damage had occurred, I would have lost consciousness most likely minutes after the injury, which gave me a little peace of mind knowing that it wasn’t as severe as I thought.

The helicopter arrived about 18 minutes after I activated the PLB, a welcome sight as my body’s natural pain management began to wear off. The paramedic administered pain relief and carefully straightened my right leg, repositioning the bone. Once the pain relief took effect, I felt as though I arrived at the hospital before the helicopter.

Throughout the process, I tried my best to stay calm and composed, drawing on my extensive training in high-stress situations. I am deeply grateful to New Zealand Rescue Services and rescueME PLB1 for providing life-saving equipment and skilled professionals. Their prompt and efficient response undoubtedly saved my life, thank you!
